Artificial Intelligence Can Now Detect PTSD

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is among the most difficult to detect mental mood disorders for years. Traditional one-on-one clinical interviews are not very successful in detecting this disease. There are two reasons for this situation. First, people in charge of therapy can be biased. Second, people suffering from PTSD can suppress their symptoms.

Researchers from New York University announced that they managed to diagnose PTSD objectively, thanks to artificial intelligence. Artificial intelligence can tell if a person has PTSD by looking at their speech pattern. The research, done in collaboration with SRI International, is published in the journal Depression and Anxiety.


According to The New York Times, SRI and NYU worked on this sound analysis program for five years. Artificial intelligence, which can understand the human voice, can also recognize PTSD signs and emotions. This app is similar to software that teaches automated customer service programs to deal with angry customers. Artificial intelligence can also capture fluctuations in the sound that the human ear cannot detect and has a very high diagnostic success of 89%.

The research was conducted with 129 veterans who had seen the battlefield, and approximately 40 thousand speech samples were collected. These sounds gave the AI ​​a chance to learn about the sound changes associated with PTSD. It turned out that people who speak slower and monotonously and people who use shorter tonal ranges are more likely to have PTSD.

AI can also detect minor changes in voice, movement in throat muscles, and whether the tongue touches the lips.


One of the researchers, Charles Marmar, states that they were quite surprised by the results and they encountered a different structure than they expected. He attributes the calm and slow speech of PTSD patients to the unresponsiveness seen in PTSD patients.

Since only male voices are used in the training of the program, the system currently only works for males, but it will definitely improve itself in the future and will be able to be used to help female soldiers as well.
