Xiaomi Reaffirms Its Commitment to Data Security and Privacy

Xiaomi has re-committed to protecting customer data during Security and Privacy Awareness Month, which is held regularly every year and concludes today. The company held various trainings and seminars for its employees at the Xiaomi Technology Park in Beijing and the Xiaomi Technology Operations Center in Singapore.

For the third consecutive year, Xiaomi has been holding special training for engineers and other employees, and has been holding various discussions with IT security professionals and the public on the importance of data security and user privacy protection. Xiaomi has also released updated white papers on security and privacy, as well as an annual transparency report detailing its data security activities.

The month-long events aim to strengthen practices related to user security and privacy protection, and increase trust in Xiaomi products through transparency and accountability.

Xiaomi has created a comprehensive management structure to protect data security and user privacy. This structure includes collaborations between cybersecurity experts, smartphone operating system engineers, lawyers and legal compliance experts. This structure is overseen by the Security and Privacy Committee, which consists of senior executives.

Expressing that the protection of data security and user privacy is of great importance for the long-term and sustainable development of Xiaomi, Cui Baoqiu, Vice President of Xiaomi and Minister of Xiaomi Security and Privacy Committee, said, “Protecting the data security and privacy of our users is our top priority as Xiaomi. Our customers care about this issue much more than others. “Xiaomi is committed to providing safe and reliable Android-based smartphones and IoT products.”

Highlighting Xiaomi’s contribution to the Android system, Eugene Liderman, Director of Android Security Strategies at Google, said, “One of Android’s greatest strengths is its diverse partner ecosystem. “Xiaomi is a great example of this and we are delighted to see continued investments in cybersecurity in their product portfolio.”

Owning the world’s largest consumer IoT platform, Xiaomi is constantly working to improve IoT security and privacy protections. Accordingly, Xiaomi held the fifth IoT Security Summit in Beijing on 29-30 June. Industry executives and experts discussed many topics at the event, from data security governance frameworks and cross-border data transfers to security of connected electric vehicles and software supply chain security solutions.

At the event that lasted throughout June, Xiaomi announced that the Electric Scooter 4 Pro received IoT Security Rating Gold level certification from Underwriter Laboratories Inc, the US-based international security research institute. The certification also demonstrated that Xiaomi’s security regarding IoT product development processes complies with international standards.

Xiaomi established the Security and Privacy Committee in 2014. Became the first Chinese company to be certified by TrustArc in 2016. Xiaomi adopted the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) of the European Union compliance assessment in 2018. In 2019, it received ISO/IEC 27001, ISO/IEC 27018 certificates for security and privacy practices. The company released its first transparency report last year, making it the first Android smartphone brand to do so. Xiaomi has further strengthened its data security capabilities by obtaining NIST CSF National Institute of Standards and Technology, Cybersecurity Framework) certification for the first time this year.
